America On the Move in Colorado was invited by the late John Parr and Civic Results to participate in the Democratic National Convention Host Committee’s “Lean n Green” task force. The goal of this group was to encourage more healthy movement (walking and biking instead of driving or being driven) and healthy eating during the DNC. A secondary goal was to enhance the positioning of Denver as the site for healthy and “green” conferences and national conventions.
As part of this committee America On the Move played a key role in training DNC volunteers to participate in the Lean n Green focus. AOM staff trained DNC volunteers to test five walking maps for accuracy, reliability, ADA friendliness, the “fun factor” and conversion to steps. The volunteers wore AOM pedometers and reported their findings, which AOM staff relayed to the mapmaking committee. The result is the “Hike and Bike” maps that were distributed during the DNC to the delegates, media and visitors to Denver. The maps will continue to be distributed via local Denver sites such as public libraries and the Denver Visitors’ Bureau.
AOM in Colorado took the lead in organizing a “Lean n Green” King Soopers Pilot project- again, training volunteers to play an active role during a week at the grocery store to promote movement and healthy shopping. Several volunteer students and community members participated in this project and AOM thanks them greatly for their time and enthusiasm with the customers.
